H1B is a skilled worker visa.
The program
allows international workers to be employed in specialty
occupations, remain in the U.S. by legally working for three years,
and can be renewed once for a total of six years. It is commonly
used for a ground on Green Card applications.

Current
H-1B Visa Numerical Cap
The annual cap includes 65,000 general H-1B visas and 20,000 H-1B
visa exemptions for foreign-born students who received advanced
degrees from U.S. schools and universities. There are several bills
pending that request increasing the number of H-1B visas.
